Rising, Shining and Setting of the King

Hi Naomi,
The diurnal sun cycle was used, among other things, as a metaphor of a king's lifetime. As a young Horus (crown-prince), a king is represented as the rising sun (Khepri). Upon succeeding his father, he takes on the full force of the mid-day sun (Re). As an old man, the king is as the setting sun (Atum). It is interesting that Atum was used for this last comparison. It seems that Atum (as Adam) represented the old race of man which gave way to the new one brought by Tefnut/Gaia (Eve).
