The Three Stooges of Thoth

Immediately prior to the Flood, the god Thoth (Lamech) ruled as regent with Horus the Younger as "crown prince" and with 30 "sons" as ministers. However, the Bible only names three sons of Lamech, namely, Jabal, Jubal, and Tubal-Cain. Jabal ("water course") seems to have served as an archetype for the later canal builder Joseph/Inyotef IV who battled the Middle Kingdom flood.
The relation, if any, of Jabal, Jubal, and Tubal to Noah and his three "sons" Shem, Ham, and Japheth is not yet clear to me. The tent dweller Jabal is possibly Japheth or Noah, however tents are typically associated with Shem and Semitic peoples. For example, Canaan was to live within the tents of Shem and the expression "to dwell in the tents of Shem and Eber" signified great learning and wisdom. The epithet Cain indicates a killer and may correspond to Ham/Horus. The musician Jubal might correspond to the passifist and winebibber Noah or possibly to Shem.
At least part of the confusion is due to the fact that the ancients allowed for variations on a theme in regard to the repetition of earlier history. For example, in the Middle Kingdom the birth order of Shem, Ham, and Japheth is different than at the time of the Great Flood (See Chapter 5 fifth paragraph of the on-line book for an explanation of this). Also in the Middle Kingdom the roles of Noah and Ham were combined in one person (Amenemhet III, see Chart 8). To make matters worse, in the crazy "space-time continuum" mentality of the Torah, traits of earlier persons are applied to later persons and vice versa.
In the on-line book, see also Note 5 in Chapter 3 and Note 3 in Chart 1.
