In Response To: Sethi I was Amenophis (Oscar Calle)

El-'Scar and El-REB, los hombres hambre,

Just a few comments of clarification before we continue:

1) Seti-Merenptah is generally considered to be Seti II, not Seti I. Egytologists now suspect that the mummy identified as Seti II was mislabeled in antiquity, and probably belongs to an unidentified prince of the early 18th Dynasty rather than to Seti I of the late 19th Dynasty. I tend to agree, however still think that the inscriptions of Seti-Merenptah are those of Seti II, the son (and beleaguered successor) of Merenptah. If you have information to the contrary, please let me know.

2) Amenophis is clearly the Greek form of Amenhotep. This name is applied to both Amenhotep III (and I think also to Amenhotep IV/Akhenaten) in Manetho's version of the Exodus. Amen-ophat is a very interesting variation of Amenophis. In Part II of my book, it is shown that Akhenaten was also sometimes called Shaphat ("Judge"). This is a highly appropriate nickname for Akhenaten/Moses, who was the "incarnation" of Re, the sun god and jostling judge of Egypt (as well as of Israelites in Exodus). There was also one other prominent king of this period whose name corresponds even more closely to Amenophat. This was Iuput, King of Upper Egypt, High Priest of Amun), and a son of Sheshonq I (future pharaoh Aye). In the Bible Iu-put (Amen/Jeho-Put) is called Jehoshaphat, because of his initiative to establish local judges over the people. Iuput conspired (successfully) to murder Sheshonq II and was in turn killed by Akhenaten and Tiye.

2) I suggested in a previous post that Queen Tiye could have been the mother of Ramses I (not Ramses II). This seems unlikely, but it is at least a possibility. However, it can be said with complete confidence (you'll have to take my word on this for the moment) that Ramses I was first a pharaoh of the Libyan throne and was called Takelot II. Between two and three years after gaining that status he named his son Seti (future pharaoh Seti I) as his "Libyan" co-regent. At that time, Seti assumed the Libyan throne name of Sheshonq III.
