with this dizzying array of multiple identities, i have to ask 'did romans {or jerusalemites} really understand the folks they saw everyday were ALSO quite different people ?'
Let's say that roman hoi-polloi gaius runs a bakery frequnted by antonia minor. Being the epitome of the virtues of roman matrons, antonia minor always waltzes over to gaius' shop to buy her own croissants and bagels. Does baker gaius realize the his customer is also a few dozen other people ?
