In Response To: Molech and the Murder of Osiris (Charles Pope)

I had another thought regarding the following verse:

"And when Jeremiah returned from Tophet, where YHWH had sent him to prophesy, he stood in the courtyard of the House of YHWH and said to all the people, "Thus said YHWH of hosts, the Elohim of Israel, 'See, I am bringing on this city and on all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have stiffened their necks so as not to hear My words.' " Jeremiah 19:14-15

It just occured to me that Ta-Ipet might be Tophet - what do you think? Is it conceivable that such "abominations" as sacrificing the firstborn could have reached the sacred precincts of Thebes?

The prophet Ezekiel also wrote about the sacrificing of the firstborn in Ezekiel 20:25-26 -

"And I also gave them up to laws that were not good, and judgements by which they would not live. And I defiled them by their own gifts, as they passed all their firstborn through the fire, so that I might make them desolate, and so that they might know that I am YHWH."

Actually the whole chapter is very interesting. Earlier it speaks about YHWH taking the children of Israel out of Mitsraim to a land of milk and honey, specifically in order to get them away from the Egyptian idols that they were defiling themselves with - see verse 7 of Ezekiel chapter 20 and onwards. Was Molech/Baal/Seth extremism spreading and competing with Amun possibly?
