Oh I think we are well beyond speculation about a "British Connection", as you say!

It's the same process that the royal family consistently employed everywhere else - adopt local identities and win the hearts and minds of the people. Make them think you are local heroes and not foreign oppressors. These legends of Joseph of Arimathea and other Gospel figures going to Britain are all reflections of the establishment of a royal province/colony, not just through a military presense but a religious agenda.
