Bruce, one way for you to understand the differences between Joe's research and Charles is this: Joe tries to relate scriptural references to historical / political events and when he finds a correlation he usually stops there, while Charles places the scriptural phrasing in the broader religious and political history of the people and the region. Although both approaches are important, I feel the latter is more crucial in understanding the meanings of passages, as there may be 2 or 3 historical and 3 or 4 religious references (eg. direct inferences to OT traditions) in just one small section.
