My personal opinion is that Hawass is stirring up controversy rather than defusing it. Race is not a "black and white" issue. There is no universally accepted definition of "black" or "white", much less a means of determining whether a mummy was a black or white or even semitic person.

There is also a tendency to apply modern day racial stereotypes to ancient peoples. Ancient peoples certainly had their own forms of racism, but we can't assume they were the same in their attitudes or racial makeup. Statements such as Hawass' that Tut was "not black" and the like are not helpful.
