Within the royal family women were essential equals with men. The practice of succession through incest virtually guaranteed it.
The challenge for the royal family was in remaining "all things to all people". In some of the societies over which they ruled, female leadership was accepted. Other groups, such as "Hebrews", were staunchly Patriarchal. In some places homosexuality was accepted, in others it was taboo. These topics are handled skillfully in the Bible.
