Ron, I don't like to rely exclusively on "etymology". It's just one element of the picture. It could be explored further in regard to this name Sampsi-geramus, but probably other aspects would lead to a more conclusive identification with a better known member of the Greco-Roman royal family such as Germanicus/Archelaus. Also, it is already intuitively obvious, at the very least, that Emperors and Popes of the Holy Roman Empire were the direct descendants of Sampsigeramus or the like of his generation. That is, there was never any discontinuity in the ruling family.
