I don't find any evidence of sympathetic magic being employed there. Wouldn't that have required a closer imitation of Gideon's methods?
On the possible common ancestry of the Jews and Spartans, it could be so. The Spartans were Herakleides, claiming descent from Herakles, who is admitted by Herodotus to be of Egyptian extraction. The Spartans arrived in Greece 1 or 2 generations after the Trojan War, I think, which would be about 160 years after the Exodus. Some intermarriage with the ruling family of Joseph in the preceecing era is likely.
