There is an excellent article on the mummy of Tut in the current (Spring 2007) issue of KMT journal. The authors conclude that the mummy was secretly looted in the tomb between the years 1926 and 1968, and probably during WWII when the tomb was not adequately guarded. It was then that the now missing frontal ribs were removed in order to extract certain valuables Carter had left on them. The article does not however deny the damage Carter and his team did to the mummy.
I remember seeing a photo in an old book showing the mummy of Tut catching some rays outside the tomb. I doubt we will ever see that photo published again. And when sunbathing was not sufficient to melt the resins, Carter and his team resorted to using hot knives on the mummy!
