primogeniture... .... priests

`
`
.. julie... corsair522 ... looking at byrne's 'the jesus gene,' i read the author's statement that priesthood in jerusalem temple was based on primogeniture. I'd never seen such a claim before. Do forum--members say 'yea' or 'nay.' Hoping some stout hearts can clear up my CONFUSION.

WHAT i BELIEVE byrne is saying is something like the following [i hope i am construing the passages correctly ] .... we know that the MAJOR priestly roles in the jerusalem temple were passed down through the cohen line. But [according to byrne] to be considered for priestly office [particulary function of temple high priest], it was not suffcient for a man to be born a cohen. He had to be a first--born son of a cohen.
