In Chapter 7 of "Caesar's Messiah" there is a discussion (p 162) of a plant called rue that was valued by the Romans for medicine, but only the cultivated variety not the wild. Atwill notes that Josephus makes a claim that this plant had the power to exorcise evil spirits.
Rue (Hebrew for "friend") is also the name used for Joshua in the Book of Genesis. This does not seem to be a coincidence.
