Helge, now your are over generalizing! Most Jews like most people are not "tricksters". The Jews that were responsible for the Old and New Testament were in fact not from the original tribes of Israel. What has emerged from my work and this thread in particular is that they were instead elitists that presumed to rule over Jews. (Accroding to Robert Eisenman, Herodians were quasi-Jews. I suppose other groups like the Alexanders/Sadducees would also fit into this category.)
Power brokers do have a track record as tricksters. We can at least give credit to the political animals that wrote the books of the Bible. They at least provided a deeper meaning in their stories and a key to extract it - "for those who had ears to hear".
