Hi Ron, Ancient Sparta was not walled. I've read that one factor for the Peloponisian War was when Athens decided to erect protective walls. Sparta relied on a good offense rather than defense. That seems to me to be the key. Another point, if your city didn't sit on trade routes or gold mines, you were probably a lot safer than if you did!
