In the second of the four tutorials just published I discuss the significance of the empty coffin in the King's Chamber. In fact, every major pyramid seems to have been retrofitted with some kind of coffin. These coffins were always empty, even when they were opened intact. Probably these coffin had no practical purpose, but served as an identification (by a later dynastic king) with Re who had been buried alive in the Great Pyramid but "resurrected" after three days.
Reverse engineering the purposes of the pyramids themselves is a far more difficult undertaking. Modern man has explored the mountains of the moon, but the pyramids of Egypt remain an almost complete mystery! I think it is now generally agreed that the Great Pyramid is a representation of the northern hemisphere and also acted as some kind of celestial observatory.
