Convolving Solar Systems?

Intuitively, it just doesn't seem feasible for the orbit of a twin sun to come close enough to our own sun for it to cause direct damage to the planets. Perhaps if the other sun also had planetoids of its own, then those planets might possibly interfere with our sun's planets. However, if a planet revolving around a twin sun regularly also passed through our Asteroid Belt, wouldn't that region be swept clear of asteroids?

Some of the 2012 scenarios are so disastrous that they become completey unbelievable. These theorists are also the same ones encouraging people to actually try to survive such a cataclysm.
