As an update to the Titus Andronicus commentary, something else occurred to me. The New Testament name Elizabeth derived from the relatively rare Old Testament name Elisheba wife of Aaron the priest. We should then conclude that there was an aspect of Queen Elizabeth to be found in the wicked Tamora (consort of Aaron), and consequently, in addition to the chaste Lavinia. Given the date of Titus Andronicus, we must assume that this was an association Elizabeth herself approved, and perhaps confessing that she could at times be her own worst enemy.
Elizabeth is expressed through all three of the daughters of King Lear - the pure Cordelia/Cordella, the promiscuous Gonoril/Gonorilla (Cf Gonorrhea) and the regal Regan/Ragan. King Lear was produced after the death of Elizabeth and offers more penetrating (and negative) insights into Elizabeth's reign and the end of the Tudor dynasty. It might well be subtitled "The Tudor Tragedy".
But, next, we will explore the play Othello, which was written just before Elizabeth's death. We will find good reason to call it "The Ottoman Tragedy" and to identify the Ottoman Empire itself as a creation of the Habsburgs. Shakespeare prophesies doom for this extension of the Habsburg Empire as well, and measure for measure. The play Othello is Elizabeth's "Parthian Shot". The play Othello expresses regret, anguish, and even apology for mistakes Elizabeth had made in her reign. Yet, in the final analysis she wanted to be remembered as a faithful bride of the Empire, and one that would be deservedly avenged on those who were unduly possessive of her, including the Holy Roman Emperor/Sultan ("Othello"), Philip II of Spain and even King James of Scotland ("el dos Santiagos"), as well as the Medici ("Cassios") of Florence.
