A new movie about Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe opens today (May 14) in theaters.

There have been a couple of documentaries this week on the History Channel and Discovery Channel.  They will probably air again in the coming week.

The interesting aspect of the moive is linking Robin Hood to the signing of the Magna Carta by King John.  The two are obviously related.  Most likely Robin Hood was a disgruntled nobleman encouraged by John to undermine the reign of his brother Richard the Lionhearted.  However, after the death of Richard the protest movement of Robin Hood was then turned against John, who was forced to compromise in England because of his more grand designs in the East (under the name of Genghis Khan).  In other words, the character of "Little John" in the Robin Hood legends was originally based on King John.
